I think there was a version 2. Then they started again with version 1. What is important is that the newer 'AE' versions will not work with footage imported from pre cameras, so there's not a lot of point in trying to upgrade, which is a shame, because I believe the later versions allow you to edit out parts of files, not just delete the whole scene. They allow transitions and fades as well, not something the earlier versions allowed. That's progress for you!

I have 1. In commercial software they tend to use a term called 'smart rendering' where only frames that have been manipulated transitions, titles etc get re-encoded. The output speed tends to be quite quick so I would guess that it's not re-encoding. I've alwasy had a thing about unnecessary re-encoding as my edit process doesn't usually go beyond trimming and joining clips.

Preferably use a 64 bits Windows 7. Second rule if the manufacturer release an update, update your version because box software are made much before the user install and use it. Cshultz they are DVDs for viewing. The HD writer program will actually split the recording to multiple disks if necessary.
